New details have emerged in the fatal tiger attack at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, with the victim identified as William Chapman. Chapman, thought to be in his early twenties and described by police as “vulnerable”, was a former student of the Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe. The school’s alumni include Eddie Redmayne, James Corden and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. As a child he had limited screen credits. He appeared in the ITV series May Contain Nuts alongside Shirley Henderson (best known for playing Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter films) and Darren Boyd, and he portrayed a young Edward Jenner, the pioneer of the smallpox vaccine, in the 2012 BBC educational series True Stories. These were his only two professional television roles, after which he did not continue acting. On Saturday he recorded himself approaching the roughly 30-stone animal after entering its enclosure at the Doncaster park. Footage shows him walking toward the tiger while it remained perched on a wooden platform. He can be heard panting as members of the public urge him to turn back, with one shouting “Seriously” and shocked onlookers saying “oh my god!”. He was later filmed sitting on the grass face-to-face with the five-year-old predator, pointing and kicking. He reportedly asked it to “stop being naughty” before its “eyes locked on him and it pounced”. Another visitor twice called “Hey!” in an effort to distract the animal, which then seized Chapman by the neck and hauled him away. He can be heard yelling “No, no, no!” and “Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop!” as the tiger repeatedly lunged. An eyewitness said “you could see blood” and described the tiger “dragging the man” by the neck. Park rangers fired warning shots, prompting the animal to retreat and be secured. Paramedics arrived shortly after 1.30 pm, but Chapman was pronounced dead at the scene. He is believed to have been living in the Doncaster area around the time of the incident.
